Jeffrey’s Story
Conventional wisdom is mistaken. Humans are not naturally selfish and violent. We want to be in good relationship with each other — and it is painful when we are not. This pain explains why the dominant society I am part of wants to (1) make up nonsensical theories about why our domination is justified, and (2) lie about the history and effects of our ancestors’ violent domination. These strategies only mask the pain; they do not heal its roots. Only the truth can do that, and only love can allow the truth to be heard. Then arises a lifetime commitment to the journey toward good relationship, being fully present with the pain, the truth and the love.
This is what I am doing now, after learning the truth of my white, English ancestors’ brutalities against the Indigenous people on this continent and abroad. I am truly grateful for the company I keep on this journey, with people like Hilary. It is wondrous to see all the awakenings going on now. I look forward to reading her book.
